Four OARC athletes were representing their Universities at the Scottish Student Athletics competition in Aberdeen today: Bobby Harcus, Zander Scott and William MacDonald for Robert Gordon in the 400m, 200m and throws events respectively and Connor Harcus for NE Scotland College in the 200m.
Bobby was first to run, placing second in his heat in 52.21 to advance automatically to the final in which he showed his true pace: breaking the 50s barrier for the first time with a time of 49.97s and picking up a bronze medal. Bobby is now just over a second off Neil Gray’s long standing Orkney senior record which he'll have in his sights. Both of Bobby's runs were inside the Faroes 2027 qualifying standard.
Zander and Connor also both made the qualifying standard in their heats of the 200m, finishing first and second in the third heat and third and sixth in the standings in 23.14 and 23.21s respectively. Zander has had a tough couple of years with injuries and didn't run in the semi final out of an abundance of caution, but certainly showed the talent he has in his one outing.
Connor did have another outing in the semi final, clocking 23.18 for a season’s best and earning a spot in the final: again managing a return from injury, Connor decided a third run in the space of a few hours was unwise and did not start the final.
Meanwhile on the field, William MacDonald was busy filling his trophy cabinet with silver, finishing in second place in all three throws events he entered: firstly in the javelin (44.23m), then the shot put (11.82m) and then perhaps most impressively of the three the discus (36.6m). The discus is an event that hasn't been coached in Orkney for a long time and William only picked it up with Aberdeen AAC in January, and this was his first competition outing. To take a silver medal at this level - and break the Orkney record set at the 1989 Island Games by Robert Cross - by almost three metres - at his very first attempt shows his real potential in this event. Both William’s javelin and shot put marks were games qualifying standards, with the discus only narrowly outside. Watch this space for more throwing exploits in this golden age for Orkney men's throws!

GOOD LUCK IN LONDON!
The TCS London Marathon is always a highlight of the running year and we're delighted to have four members running this year: Sarah Finn & Judith Bonner were the lucky winners of this year's member place draw, Magnus Harrold has qualified by time and Dawn Williams is running for Clan Cancer Support in memory of her mum Karen - and is doing so in a full clown costume as she pursues her second Guinness World Record for a fancy dress marathon after completing the course inside a house for Shelter two years ago: this costume looks a little easier to run in at least!
For Sarah, club trustee, Couch to 5k leader and all round good egg, the marathon will mark (I think) her 2704th consecutive day of running: a bit of a shame the organisers couldn't have moved the date of next year's race to her 3000th day milestone, but it'll have to do!
Good luck to Dawn, Magnus, Judith & Sarah and we look forward to spotting you on the TV! Good luck also to anyone else travelling from Orkney down to London to take part, including Karen from Scholes CA. It'll be a brilliant day. See less
